New Players Needed

Morden Cricket Club are always looking for new players of all ages and abilities to join our social and friendly club. We have 4 teams, 2 on a Saturday who play in the Surrey Cricket League and 2 on a Sunday who play friendlies both home and away. We have our own ground in a peaceful setting at Morden Park with our own pavillion, including changing rooms and a fully stocked bar.

MORDEN FUTURE UNDER THREAT

Morden’s long-established cricket club could be forced to move premises or close if threatened rent hikes come into force next year.

Merton Council revealed to Morden Cricket Club it is keen to more than double the club’s pavilion and ground hire – currently about £8,000 to £9,000 a year – to £19,000 a year.

To maximise revenue for the cash-strapped council, the council is keen for the ground and pavilion to be used in the winter months – when cricket is not played.

The council wants to do this by introducing football to the ground and it may set up three football pitches on the park currently being used for cricket. Introducing football would bring £19,000 into the council coffers as the game is played in the winter and summer months – doubling the revenue cricket gives it.

However, as Morden Cricket Club, which was established in 1891, has been using the park for 60 years – the council is giving the club first refusal on the plans. As a goodwill gesture, the council said it might give the club a discount on the annual fees as the side has been there a long time.

In a nutshell, the club has a choice. Accept the increase in fees and carry on as normal, or the council introduces football and possibly forces the cricket club out.

But at the club’s AGM on Sunday, concerns were raised that the club could not afford the fee increase even with a discount. The club has also been told it must now also pay for the electricity it uses at the pavilion.

A spokesman for the cricket club said: “This is a worrying development. We understand the council is looking at all its sports facilities regarding raising revenue and we appreciate the pressures the council is under financially.

“But asking the club to pay that some of money is going to be extremely difficult. We could be in a situation where we may have to vacate the premises if some compromise is not reached.”

One of the possibilities is for the cricket club to merge with a football club – splitting the fees –with football being played in the winter and from September while cricket takes place from May until the beginning of September.

Chasing 99, thanks largely to Mansoor’s 5 for 27 and Atta’s 3 for 18, the side made it look easy with Mansoor adding 65 with the bat supported by Richardson’s 20.
A delighted Yogi said: “This was a great result and hopefully we can build a platform for the rest of the season.”

annual dinner and dance.

The highlights were the awards which went to
Del, Steve, Jordan, CJ, Prakash and Maurice and, of course, Gordon
doing his Kung Fu Fighting impression.

It might do little to stave off relegation but it showed the perseverance and fighting spirit the side have shown all season.

The side notched up 173 in its innings with young CJ top-scoring with 34. Barry Ward helped the scoreline tick along with a good 34 while Tariq scored 18.

But with a small total to defend the bowlers had it all to do and they put in a first class effort. CJ took three wickets, while Tariq took two wickets and captain Del Ballard three wickets including the prized-wicket of Sahard for 42 to ensure a well-earned victory as the visitors were bowled out for 124, which included four ducks.
